Meeko, male, Jack Russell Terrier, tri-color, Date of Birth: 1/23/07, Weight: 13 lbs.
Meeko has come a long way in the year that he has been with us. He used to live at a puppy mill - the worst you could imagine. He and many other dogs were going to be executed by their "breeder", for various sins (i.e., refusing to breed, inability to breed, too hungry, sick (but treatable illnesses, etc.). Working thru a third party, we were able to rescue everyone in danger, including Meeko. He was a sight to see that day. Cowering, dehydrated, shivering, bones protruding from lack of food, and so tired.
Fast forward to today: Meeko has blossomed into a very intelligent, affectionate, fun loving and very friendly guy! A low shedder, he loves to cuddle with his humans. True to the breed, (vermin hunters), Meeko should not live with cats, birds, or rodents. Also true to the breed, he requires a fenced yard (remember, he is small, so check those gaps between fence and ground). Meeko walks on a leash like a gentleman (be watchful of bunnies and squirrels along the way) - potential adopters must be willing to exercise this intelligent breed (or they will create their own new and fun jobs, which may not be what you had in mind).
Meeko does like to perform his "watch dog" duties at home, but would not be considered a "guard dog", by any means. Ready for the time of your life - come visit Meeko!

Buddy is a male Cocker Spaniel, date of birth 2/30/08 and weighs 27 lbs. When Buddy got loose from his previous owners, the result was getting struck by a car, resulting in complete loss of vision. He was then surrendered to Heartland. Buddy has been evaluated by an eye specialist, in hopes there might be some way to restore his sight, but sadly there just isn't. While his story is heartbreaking, Buddy is not nearly as limited as one might imagine. He relies on his other senses and gets around amazingly well by memorizing obstacles in his route around the house and in his fenced yard. It is a unique and wonderful experience to form a bond with a special needs animal - not that forming a bond with Buddy would otherwise be difficult. He is a sweet, affectionate boy who is happy to be on your lap receiving love or snuggled up on his bed, happily chewing on a rawhide. Buddy likes other dogs and would probably benefit being placed with a friendly dog who can help be his eyes. He has such a big heart! He is crate trained and house trained. Buddy would love a new home for the holidays where he can get all the TLC that he deserves! Tag#6275HHS
Dexter is a 3 - 4 year old male Blue Heeler. Weight 37 lbs.
People say, I'm the "Life of the Party". Can I tell you a joke or two?
I am the happiest guy you will ever know. That is why Heartland volunteer had to rescue me from certain doom at a kill shelter. I'm a very sweet and friendly dog. I like to play ball and love playing in water. (can't wait for summertime!) My foster mom said I listen well and that I am very obedient. What more could you want?
Dexter is crate trained and housetrained. He had his teeth cleaned when his neuter surgery was being done so that his happy smile will be even brighter, shining just for you.
Roxie - with her beautiful black coat we were very surprised when Roxie’s heartworm test came back as positive. Without treatment Roxie’s future would have looked much different but Heartland will see that she receives the expensive and life-saving treatment and go on to become the family pet she was meant to be. Heidi, Dachshund, female, Black & Tan, Date of Birth: 7/99, Weight 14 lbs.
Heidi sat at a rural pound for a week - surely her family would come get her - surely. Her fate would be sealed if we didn't find a foster home for her. Most pounds are not set up for adoption of unwanted and stray pets. If owners don't show up in 5 days to a week, these unlucky canines and felines are in most cases, humanely euthanized. Snuffed out forever. Quite sad and always preventable. But still, there she sat on the concrete pad, wagging her tail, amidst the flies and waste. We can't ignore this huge problem of unending supplies of companion animals - perfect to most, but unwanted by their owners, breeding and more breeding. Upon opening her cage door, she came waddling out and wagging her tail. Hooray! - she is safe now and in foster care, where she has a nice bed of her own, medical care, great food and clean water, no flies!, unlimited kisses from her foster family, other friendly dogs to socialize with - and her 2nd favorite (after food, love and her bed): cats to cuddle with and lick! She's a stitch! Our first trip to the vet, confirmed our concerns, though: she has multiple tumors (breast and skin), and
has had numerous litters of pups (so she has never been spayed). Then her chest was x-rayed, with the good news that she does not have cancer spread to her lungs, so, our vet suspects the breast/skin tumors are benign. While viewing the chest x-rays, and after listening to her heart with the stethoscope, more unwanted news came: her heart is very enlarged. Which then led the conversation to the fact that she probably would not survive massive surgery. Due to her age, going into heat is unlikely, so she cannot be spayed, if the result would be deadly for her. And the many tumors, although not pleasant to look at, won't be able to be removed either. Our good news is she is heartworm negative and definitely not in any type of pain. Our goal is keeping her comfortable and appreciating her for what she is and taking each day as it comes. She has been started on heart medicine, which will help take the strain off her heart. Would you like to sponsor Heidi? She is the sweetest most gentle dog you could meet - with children, adults, other dogs and cats - and she is house trained, too. Your sponsorship will help us keep Heidi comfortable and allow us to continue her life extending heart medication, heartworm medication, and lots of yummy food and even a new bed would be nice - just for Heidi! If so, please click on the "sponsor me" button and the rest is easy and so appreciated. Thank you! HHS Tag# 6401KD
Papi is a male chihuahua, date of birth 3/18/07 and weighs 6 lbs. Papi was taken into foster care from a local animal shelter. He was a very happy little guy to be saved and has shown his foster mom since day one. His tail is always wagging and appears to always have a little smile on his face. He is very playful and enjoys playing fetch or just rolling around with his little tennis ball if nobody is around to play with him. He gets along well with other dogs and doesnt mind cats. He is crate trained and house trained. Tag# 5941GG
Frazier is a 1 year old Plott Hound mix. weight 40 lbs
Frazier is a lively young plott hound mix. He is very sweet and affectionate. He loves going for walks, running after a ball and playing with the other dogs in his foster home. He really enjoys curling up with his foster mom to watch TV. He is house trained and crate trained. Due to his hound nose, Frazier will need a fenced yard to keep him safe when he is outdoors.
Frazier came to us with a broken leg after probably being hit by a car. It had apparently been broken for awhile, as evidenced by the amount of muscle wasting that had occurred. He had surgery to fix the leg and has been concentrating all summer on re-building strength and muscle in the leg. He now uses it 95-100% of the time! He has captured the hearts of everyone in his foster mom’s neighborhood, as they watch his tremendous progress.
Annie is a Labrador Retriever mix, DOB 7/1/08 and weight approx. 40 lbs. Annie loves people, and she is very friendly and affectionate. Annie is crate-trained and house-trained, and knows how to sit nicely for treats. She will make a wonderful family pet. Annie shows a little too much interest in cats so would be best in a home without cats and she can be a bit selective with her dog friends so would need to meet your dog first. Annie has been spayed, microchipped, is up to date on vaccinations and on flea/tick preventative.

Stella- app 8 year old Laborador Retriever Mix. She has been spayed, heartworm tested negative and on preventative. She is vaccinated and also has a microchip. Stella came to us as a result of her owner passing away. No one in the family would take this beloved pet that the owner had loved dearly.
Stella is a good girl, she has very nice manners on a leash, loves to hang out in the house with you, and gets along with other dogs and cats that are used to dogs.
This mature lady has a lot of good time left in her, please consider her as she would love to have a home of her own again and not live her life out in foster care. This dog has lived in a home and is housebroken. HHS Tag# 5598AS
Special adoption fee of $80.
Shawn – is a male Shepard mix, DOB 8/25/07 and weighs approx. 60 lbs. Shawn is a friendly boy, loving to be petted or by your side. Shawn loves to take walks and walks very well with his foster mom when she takes him for walks with her 10 month old son in the stroller. He walks right along by her side, never pulling or trying to rush ahead, and every once in a while leaning over to give her son a gentle kiss as if to say thanks for walking with me. He is always a gentleman, very quiet in his crate and will readily go in when you tell him to "kennel". Shawn does like to play ball but doesnt always want to bring it back to you. He will sit on command and take a treat gently from you. He is a very happy dog and will give you a great big smile to show you! Shawn can be a little picky with other canine companions so it would be best to introduce him to your current pet if you are interested in giving him a home. Shawn is crate-trained and ready to find a new home where he can be your best friend. Tag#5948HHS
Skylar is a five year old purebred boxer, weighing approx 79 lbs. Sadly, she is mourning the loss of her owner who recently passed away. She was at her owner's side when they found her, as if she didn't want to let go. She is a sweet, loving girl who enjoys following you around and being petted. She is housetrained and knows sit and shake commands. She had a little too much to eat at her former home so she is working on getting her slim figure back. She enjoys walks and gets along well with other dogs. Skylar is very gentle and would make a great family pet or a companion for another pet. She would love for someone to take her in and mend her broken heart. AC
Cosmo is a male red merle, Australian Shepard, DOB 11/15/01 and weighs 49 lbs. With his unique coloring, Cosmo is a very striking, handsome dog with the most unique eyes. Cosmo was actually adopted out as a pup and was recently returned. Poor Cosmo really didn’t understand what happened to his home and grieved the loss of his family. He is adjusting to life as a foster and enjoys attention from all of our volunteers as well. Cosmo is crate and housetrained. Although Cosmo is a little older than most of our dogs waiting for homes but he is definitely the most behaved. He listens very well, knows sit and shake and likes to play with toys. He will fetch the ball and bring it back to you by dropping it in your lap so you can throw it again. He would make a wonderful addition to any family. Tag#5965HHS
Willow is an 8 week old Chocolate Lab/Staffordshire Terrier mix. This little one was being given away at only 3 weeks old, with her littermates, at a rural gas station. Willow was the last of the litter and lucked out when a Heartland volunteer's husband happened by and knew he had to bring her home! Of course, at such a young age, Willow needed bottle feeding and has had to rely on her foster mom to teach her the things her Mom should have been teaching her. She has been socialized with other puppies, larger dogs, kitties and people. Willow is your typical pup - full of energy and antics. She is also very loveable and doesn't mind long cuddles in your lap. Crate training this sweetie has been a breeze and house training is well on its way. Willow is spayed, microchipped, UTD on vaccines, dewormed and on flea preventative. #RT

Ella is a female English Pointer, date of birth 9/25/08 and weighs about 60 lbs. Ella came to Heartland as a stray picked up by animal control. She was very happy to come into a nice warm foster home as the shelter only had outdoor kennels and it was getting very cold for her. She is a very happy, energetic, and affectionate dog and will sit nicely by your side to be petted. She gets along well with other dogs but should go to a home without cats. Ella loves to play ball and will happily bring it right back to you for you to throw it for her again. Like the pointer breed, Ella loves to be with her human companions and being by your side, whether going for a walk or jog, cooking dinner, or just watching television, as long as she is with you she is a very happy and content dog. She is crate trained and house trained. Tag#6295GG Adoption Fee $200

We recently lost our little dachshund, Honey, she had to be euthanized due to complications from medicine she was on and when I read Heidi's story, I just wanted to do something for her. I wish it could be more, but the work all these animal rescue people do is so inspiring, hopefully you get lots of donations. Thank you for all you do and best wishes to you all, especially Heidi!!

LIONA- I am about a 10 month old Shih Tzu/chow mix. Yes, my mom was a Shih Tzu and my dad was a traveling salesman were pretty sure was chow. I am a perfect little lioness. I was in a very bad situation in a rural area. The people who had us let us run wild, the neighbors were threatening to shoot us and all kinds of bad things. Luckily, a nice lady as to have us and got us to a rescue group or the local animal control would have came and got us and probably put us to sleep. My sister got adopted so I am waiting my turn.
I have been spayed, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested negative, on preventative, and have a microchip. I do well with cats and dogs that are used to other dogs and should go to a family that has another dog. I am shy at first as I wasn't treated good by people. Once I get to know you, I will love you. I am working on crate training as it scares me but getting better. I understand and doing great with the housebreaking.
I would love to have my own family so I never have to be afraid again. Tag#6311 DP
