Just wanted to let everyone at HHS know how Abby is doing. (She is the black lab mix that was named Lynn who was in Karen’s home before her adoption.)
She continues to bring us joy each and every day. She’s been part of our family for about four weeks now and we couldn’t be any happier. She is growing, she weighed 43 pounds when we had her at the vet two weeks ago. We go for walks nearly every day and she is getting used to the sights and sounds of our subdivision. We call her the “stealth dog” because of her fondness for scouting and chasing rabbits in our backyard. She is very sweet, loving and affectionate and has really made our house her home.
We absolutely love her and thank the wonderful people at HHS for being able to take her in when she was homeless. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the wonderful work you do to keep the animals safe and well cared for. We will try to make a visit back up to Petsmart when you are having an adoption event. Keep up the great work.

Mikey came into our lives the day that I (Heartland's webmaster) posted Mikey's photos and story on the Heartland website. One look at Mikey's face and my wife and I fell in love with him.
He was the result of accidental breeding of an unaltered black Labrador Retriever and a German Shorthaired Pointer.
As a puppy, he was given away to strangers who let him run loose, which resulted in him being hit by a car (driver did not stop.) The severe damage to his leg was left untreated for some time. When Heartland was finally contacted for help, every effort was made by HHS and Dr. McCann to save Mikey's leg. Unfortunately too much time had passed and it was no longer possible. Mikey's left rear leg had to be amputated.
Mikey healed well and went to many adoptions at Petsmart. Even though many people said how cute and sweet he was, no one wanted a three legged dog.
At that point we asked to meet Mikey, it was love at first sight and he became part of our family.
Since then, Mikey has graduated from Basic Dog Obedience Class, participated in several charity "Dog Walks", been assessed for Agility and was found to be capable of working the obstacle course.
Mikey has a wonderful sense of humor, is very sweet and affectionate and loves to play fetch. He loves to run full speed around the yard with 1 to 4 toys in his mouth. When anyone mentions him missing a leg we tell them "Shhhh.....don't tell Mikey, he doesn't know!"

Mikey at 4 months. How can you not fall in love with that face?.
Mikey today 8/02....toy in his mouth as usual.
Let me introduce you to "Xena", warrior princess, doberman mix. She had some slight battles to deal with but nothing she couldn't handle is how she got her name. Heartland Humane Society of MO received her with a partial leg at 5 weeks old. She was born at the Winfield lock and dam and the vet. said she must have been born like that, we never really found out. Her siblings were all boys and just fine. Due to the partial leg trying to grow and constant risk for infection, it was removed along with her shoulder blade at 10 weeks old. Xena had some slight problems at first due to her growing and learning to get around with three legs. She can't do steps or hop up or down into cars, so I just pick her up. You ought to see her go in the yard, she can run like a rabbit with those back legs. She has grown up into such a beautiful dog. Xena also goes to work with her mom to train students to be veterinary assistants, she teaches them a lot about 3-legged dogs that are missing a front leg. The students even helped raise money for her surgery. This is my girl, she is so wonderful, loving, happy, and dedicated to her family. She loves to wrestle with her dog brothers and lounge on the sofa. We was blessed to get this girl and we love her dearly! She is my "Angel from Heaven"
Sincerely,
Donna and Brian Powell
Hello! I recently adopted "Rocky" the beagle/terrier mix from Heartland Humane Society a couple of months ago. He has made a great adjustment into our home and gets along wonderfully with my other animals. He accompanied us on a road trip to upstate New York, where he showed off his ability to play with any animal. He is cute and very affectionate. He is always at my feet curled up in a ball! He loves going for walks and is very smart (he knows basic commands). I have started taking him to the dog park which he also loves! He is great with kids and loves to be petted. He has warmed
up to everyone except my husband (may be a dominance thing?)! Anyway, I love the new addition to my family!
Thanks!

Dear Karen,
I am writing to update you on our adoption of Zinnia (Tori) 1 year ago (a week ago). We happily celebrated 1 glorious year together as a family. Zinnia is the light or our lives. We cannot even begin to express how much joy and happiness she has brought us. We are grateful for her every day.
She is also bringing joy to many other people. She has become a certified therapy dog and goes to hospitals and nursing homes delighting everyone who sees her. My dad has Alzheimer's and she makes him smile all the time, too. Her mission is to love, and she accomplishes that so effortlessly!
But her two very favorite things are to run and to sleep on our bed. Oh, and she absolutely loves to go places with us even travel on the airplane!
Thanks to you are long overdue. You helped us with the paperwork for her to attain her certification. And for that we are very grateful. Most of all we feel SO blessed and proud to have Zinnia. She was a diamond in the rough when we picked her up, and has turned into a shining star in 1 year.
Many many thanks to you and Heartland for being the angels that delivered her to us!!!
With deep gratitude,
Celia and Randy Fox
Dear Karen,
Well, it's been a full year with Mikey, and it couldn't have gone better. He is a wonderful dog, and
everyone always marvels at how well behaved he is. He weighs 83 lbs and is one handsome devil! He gets comments wherever we go (he LOVES Babler park and Creve Coeur park) and for some reason children are drawn to him like moths to a porch light! Even though he towers over them, they can't get enough puppy kisses. We just had company for Thanksgiving, so my house was full with 4 kids under the age of 7! I was a little concerned, because Mikey has never had that
many kids in his house before, but he handled it like a natural. Not one instance where a kid got scratched or scared. Mikey even shared all his toys without an ounce of possessiveness.
Here are some pictures of Mikey with our son Alex, who is now 7 months old. He is an angel with the baby, he is very sweet and gentle. He reminds me of Nana, the St. Bernard in Peter Pan. One of Alex's favorite games is to try to grab Mikey's tongue as he licks Alex's hand. They both love it. They are quickly becoming best friends, and Alex giggles and bounces when Mikey comes in the room. He doesn't even do that for me! :) "Snakes and snails and puppy-dog tails,
that's what little boys are made of!"
I hope the holidays are going well for you, and that Heartland Humane Society is still successful. I'm going to try to catch you at Petsmart one of these weekends so I can brag and show Mikey off. Do you know when you are going to be there? Please let me know, I'd like to thank you in person for such a great dog. You do wonderful work.
Merry Christmas,
Laura, Jason, and Alex
Greetings from the home of the BEAUTIFUL calico girl who was formerly known as “Kit Kat”. Her name in the Serati household is ‘C.C’ (ok, not so original, but we have a theme going here.)
She has fit in well in the household and has established an amicable truce with the dog (female, mixed breed). Her relationship with her older feline ‘brother’ is one of mutual avoidance (that’s how I deal with people I don’t like too!!).
Our vet gave her a clean bill of health and has advised she is closer to a year old than 2 (0r 3 as the paperwork indicated). It’s sure evident as she is very kitten like in playing with anything that dangles! It’s been so long since there was a kitten around here – it’s too funny and o so much fun.
Thank you for all of your help and persistence in making this ‘love connection’. I have attached a few photos of her – she’s up to 9.4 lbs!!

p.s. ‘hugs and purrs’ to her foster mom Gina.
In August of 2002 we found a picture of Rita (the dog on the left) on the Heartland web site. (She was known as Margartia then.) We knew Rita would be the perfect addition to our family, which already consisted of one dog Sara, age 9. We wanted to get a puppy to help keep Sara young. When we went to Petsmart to see Rita, she walked up to us and gave us the sweetest puppy look. She stole our hearts at that moment. That was three and half years ago, with each day Rita shares her unconditional love with everyone that comes in contact with her. She is very sweet and loves to get attention from anyone that will give it to her. Along with the attention, she loves to lay on the back of a chair in the living room and watch the world through the window. Rita seems to love life and table food.
In September of 2005, we had to put Sara to sleep because of kidney failure. She was 12. We waited several months and decided it was time to bring another dog into our family. We took Rita with us as we looked to give her another sister. Rita was very picky and did not like any of the dogs that we introduced her to. In January of 2006, we saw the picture of Sally (the dog on the right) on the Heartland website. We took Rita to Petsmart for the introduction and Rita finally found a dog that she liked! We took Sally home that day to join her new family. Sally has been with us for almost three months now. Sally and Rita are the best of friends. They love to play with each other and entertain everyone with their antics.
Thank you Heartland for this wonderful service that you provide for the animals. Our family would not be complete without our girls!

Hi Angie,
Wanted to give you an update on Maui & Cabo (aka "Mr. Tumnus/Mickey" and "Mac/Buddy")!! It's hard to get a decent picture of either of them except when they're napping, but this will give you an idea of how BIG they've gotten and how Maui's coat turned out.
They are growing up fast but still have a lot of kitten fun left in them. Maui is our little hunter - Clyde calls him the Artful Dodger. Always on the prowl, always looking for a snack or a scam. Cabo is much more laid back, he's our little butterball. He's always ready to roll over on his back (we call it "bloop!") for a two handed belly rub
Take care,
Shauna Sconce
Hi Donna, Thought you might enjoy this picture of Seiko. This was taken
about a month ago, he weighs 40 lbs now and is doing great. He is such the
lover puppy. He sits with me every morning while I fix my hair and makeup.
He is doing great on the house breaking and of course loves to play out in
the snow. He prefers to eat the ice and snow, when it's available, over
drinking his water. And naturally the cat's water tastes better than his
water....? He is a great dog and very smart. I'm so glad we have him.
You can forward this on to the shelter if you want.
Thanks again for choosing us to be Seiko's parents!
